Surface water temperatures in East Galveston Bay near Crystal Beach, Texas are around
85 degrees. This week, we focused most of our attention on
slot redfish in shallow water, and the fishing did not disappoint.

Redfish Fishing in East Galveston Bay

The shallow-water redfish bite has been good. We’ve had success using
light-colored paddle tails on 1/8-ounce jig heads. Depending on where the fish are holding,
we’ve also been rigging paddle tails weedless to work through shallow grass and other cover.

In areas with heavier shell, fishing soft plastics under a popping cork with a 12-inch leader
has also produced good results. Rocks, grass lines, and drains have been some of the most productive places
to target redfish when the wind, tide, and water conditions line up.

Speckled Trout and Sand Trout on the Reefs

We’ve also had some good days catching speckled trout and sand trout on East Galveston Bay reefs
when the wind allows us to fish those areas effectively. Fish have been caught in both the upper and lower
parts of the water column, so changing your lure depth and presentation can help you find where the trout
are feeding.

Bull Redfish Are Showing Up

A few bull redfish have also been caught while fishing these same areas. With slot redfish
in the shallows and trout and larger reds around the reefs, anglers have several options when fishing
East Galveston Bay right now.

Fall Fishing on the Upper Texas Coast

The summer crowds are beginning to thin out, and conditions are getting better for
fall fishing on the Upper Texas Coast. This is a great time to plan a fishing trip to
Crystal Beach and Bolivar Peninsula and enjoy East Galveston Bay before the colder winter
weather arrives.
