Water clarity has been extremely good for East Galveston Bay lately, giving anglers some excellent fishing opportunities despite the windy conditions. We have experienced strong South to Southeast winds throughout the past week, which limited us to targeting the South Shoreline, marsh drains, and protected back lakes most of the time. Even with the weather challenges, fishing has remained productive for those willing to adapt and focus on protected areas with good bait activity and moving water.
Our best success came while fishing shallow flats with scattered shell near pinch points where tidal current movement was strongest and nervous bait activity was visible. These areas have consistently produced solid catches of Speckled Trout, Redfish, and even a few Flounder before the closure. The Redfish bite has been especially steady around grass lines and marsh edges where mullet and shrimp have been active nearby. When the bait is present, the fish have not been far behind.
Imitation shrimp lures under popping corks with 12-inch leaders have continued to produce excellent results for our anglers and charter guests. This setup has been especially effective when drifting shorelines and working marsh openings with active bait. We have also had success throwing 1/8 oz jig heads paired with Wac Attack and Deadly Dudley soft plastic tails in lighter natural colors. These presentations have worked well in the cleaner water conditions we’ve been seeing recently.
For anglers specifically targeting Flounder before the season closure, Gulp Shrimp rigged on weightless swimbait hooks performed very well around marsh drains and sandy pockets near moving water. As always, remember that Flounder season is currently closed through December 14th, so please handle any incidental catches carefully and release them safely. With stable tides and clear water conditions continuing, we expect the Trout and Redfish bite to remain strong heading into the coming weeks.
