Galveston – Bolivar Ferry
Ferry Between Galveston and Bolivar Peninsula
The Galveston–Bolivar Ferry is the vital transportation link between Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula along Highway 87, providing a free ferry service 24 hours a day. Operated by TxDOT since 1934, this historic ferry crossing has served residents, visitors, and commercial traffic for generations and remains one of the most unique travel experiences on the Upper Texas Coast.
Each ferry trip spans approximately 2.7 miles across the Houston Ship Channel and takes about 18 minutes from dock to dock. Ferries are designed to accommodate around 70 vehicles, up to 500 passengers, and a six-member crew. Commercial traffic is limited, with only 8 eighteen-wheelers allowed per crossing, each weighing up to 80,000 pounds. Travelers may drive on or walk on, making the ferry ideal whether you’re commuting, sightseeing, or planning a day trip.
At least one ferry operates 24/7, with a second ferry entering service at 6:30 a.m. and a third added in the afternoon. During peak seasons, holidays, major events, and high-traffic periods, up to seven ferries may be running to keep traffic moving smoothly between Galveston and Bolivar Peninsula.
Many visitors choose to walk on the ferry simply to enjoy the experience. Passengers can relax in the air-conditioned interior seating area surrounded by large windows or step outside to the upper observation deck for sweeping coastal views. Departing from Bolivar Peninsula, riders enjoy views of Fort Travis, the Bolivar Lighthouse, massive tankers, and ships entering or leaving port. Approaching Galveston, the ferry passes Seawolf Park, the U.S. Coast Guard Station, and offers distant views of the Galveston Yacht Basin as it docks.
The ferry crosses the Houston Ship Channel, one of the busiest ports in the nation, with approximately 7,000 ships traveling through each year. Along the way, it’s common to spot dolphins swimming alongside vessels, shrimp boats harvesting fresh Gulf seafood, and bay and offshore fishing boats heading to their favorite spots.
A ride on the Galveston–Bolivar Ferry is more than transportation—it’s an experience. Whether you’re traveling between destinations, enjoying a coastal vacation, or taking a scenic day trip, the ferry offers incredible photo opportunities and unforgettable views. Don’t forget your camera.
