Speckled trout are starting to move into their spring fishing patterns on East Galveston Bay, showing up on shallow flats over shell beds and providing some of the best action for anglers over the past few days. The key to finding fish right now is paying close attention to bait activity and signs of life like pelicans and wading birds, which are strong indicators of feeding trout.
Redfish action has been solid this week, especially around marsh drains and very shallow water along grass edges during higher tides. Anglers are having success using imitation shrimp and soft plastic tails under popping corks with a 1-foot leader. Popular baits like Deadly Dudley and WacAttack tails in light colors paired with 1/8 oz jig heads continue to produce consistent bites. Jerkbaits and swimbaits are also working, while topwater lures have been effective early in the morning and late in the evening.
On the flats, the most productive method lately has been using a popping cork with artificial bait, which is producing both quality trout and higher numbers. As always, adjusting your retrieve and presentation can make a big difference, so let the fish tell you what they want.
Fishing on East Galveston Bay should continue to improve as warmer temperatures and longer days increase fish activity along the Upper Texas Coast. If you’re planning a fishing trip to Crystal Beach or Bolivar Peninsula, now is a great time to get on the water.
